DOT'S DIARIES 2010

Monday 27th September

Did “soil and earth” in Geography today. It's amazing, you look at deserts now like the Sahara desert and you think they've always been like that but really they were once forests and rivers and stuff. It's 'cos people cut down so many trees and bushes which hold the earth together and stops it being blown away.

It's called soil erosion.

STILL going on now in places like the Himalayas where people living in the mountains need to find firewood. Then the OTHER thing that happens is the earth gets all loose on the mountain slopes and when there's a lot of rain it all slides down and whole VILLAGES can get buried under mud and rocks and stuff, which is terrible. Plus there's no earth left to plant new stuff in.

It's why people like ActionAid and SolarAid are finding new ways for people to be able to cook and keep warm without cutting down trees for firewood. Superbo!!
