Monday 5th July
Had CRAZY weekend with Dad’s friend Roger Fittles, the wild plane-spotter. Soon as we arrived he said “The four-motor’s coming sooner than I thought, we’ve got to go!” ????
Mum was dying for a coffee but he wouldn’t let us even get out of Wilhelmina we had to drive STRAIGHT off, following him in this big Land Rover he’s got which he calls ‘The Bellowing Beast’. (It is quite noisy actually!)
Drove for HOURS (felt like it anyway) and then went up this tiny track to the top of a hill called ‘Merrydown Breaks’ (don’t know why.) Mum was getting ratty but Roger’s cool, first thing he did was get out a HUGE hamper full of food and hot coffee and these French pastries called “croissants”. And chairs and a table AND a shade thing so Mum was OK!
Then he got out some HUGE binoculars. Said a World War II Lancaster bomber would be flying past and this was… bedtime!
