Wednesday 17th March
Cool, we’re going to go to an aircraft museum in our ‘History of Flight’ project. It’s at a place called Dunley, and it’s where they used to fly fighter planes in the ‘Battle of Britain’ which was when the Royal Air Force stopped the Nazi bombers from smashing us up.
We’re going to see a really old plane there called ‘The Sopwith Camel’, which was a “biplane”, they called it that ‘cos it had two wings, one above the other, like the ‘Wright Flyer’, the Wright Brothers plane that flew first (from near a place called ‘Kitty Hawk’. Sounds like a cat!!)
“bi” means two, like a bicycle has two wheels.
Also there are planes there which were in the Battle of Britain, one called a Hurricane and one called a Spitfire. Mrs Redman showed us a film about them. Slam says he wants to be an RAF pilot now, long as he can still play basketball if he’s not flying!!
