The grinding, roaring sound grew louder and louder.
The whole floor of the Net-plain wobbled and shook. Spirals of light flashed and crackled across the sky. Now there was a screeching sound too, like someone trying to open a sliding door that was stuck and needed oiling.
Then, right in front of them but a long way off, a black jagged shape pushed its way out of the floor of the Net plain. It was shaped like a shark's fin - but this was no shark.
It was like a shiny piece of black rock. All round it, like sparklers on bonfire night, crackled a sparkling flame - a green flame.
Wizzie bark-barked and growled, his tail tucked between his legs. Mr Mouise peeked out from under her T-shirt, went "Oh NO, no WAY!!" and burrowed back in again even further.
Dot looked round. She felt really scared. She didn't know what to do. But there was nowhere to run to, nowhere to hide - and anyway, instead of the usual bluey-green light of Networld everything had gone murky and dark.
And the black shape was getting bigger and bigger, ripping up through the floor of the net plain, with more jagged peaks pushing upwards. Now the scary shape was as big as a house - and it was growing all the time.
Dot was totally frightened - what could she do? She wished they'd NEVER come looking for Phargon!
But then she heard - a voice in her head. And she'd never been so happy to hear it! So long now you can't just have been sleeping!"
Because the jagged black shape was getting bigger and bigger and closer and closer to where the three friends were standing (or hiding, at least one of them!) Here's a place you do wanna go!"
Now the black shape was as tall as a big hill, and it was still growing. But the sparkly green lights had stopped, though the grinding, screeching noises were louder than ever, as the huge shape pushed up higher and higher, blocking out the Net-sky. Then you'll see something to make you smile!" Wizzie put his head back and howled. Dot jumped. She'd forgotten to tell him about Cursor! "It's OK, Wiz" she said, bending down to stroke him in the special place behind his ear. "Cursor's here! It's OK now!" "Where?" said Mr Mouse, his voice all muffled but still trembly. "I can hear him - in my head!" said Dot. "What is it with cats, NEVER there when you need them, all OVER the place when you don't!" groaned Mr Mouse. "Let's get out of here nownowNOW!" But in the very next moment, the floor of the Netplain shook, there was a huge, booming crash - and the mountain stopped growing. Because that's what it was, now - a mountain. Glistening black rock ran up it into the sky as far as you could see. It was a bit like a pyramid in Egypt, but all uneven and out of shape. In fact Dot couldn't see the top of the mountain any more - it was too high up. With a splintering crack that made them all jump again, lightning ran all over it, crackling and sparking, and making a funny burning smell - like the smell you get when a plastic saucepan handle gets burnt on your kitchen stove.
"Pooh!" went Wiz, putting a paw over his nose. You're in touch with some internet glory!" Give it a second, you'll know what you're here for!" But there wasn't any time to worry about that - because something weird was happening to the black mountain!
