Chapter 22 - On set

"I tell ya, it was just the greatest!"

Mr Mouse jumped from his fave position - leaning back against the edge of Dot's laptop with his paws behind his head - and started walking up and down, waving his arms about.

"It was this amazing film set - never seen anything like it. When that Adrian fixes something up, he fixes it REAL good!"

"Wait a minute, wait a minute" said Wizard, holding up a paw to try and slow Mr Mouse down a bit. "What - where did this film set come from?"

"Oh, yeah, right" said Mr Mouse. "Sorry! What happened was, when old Ade clicked his fingers like that, it was like this big kind of window opened up just next to us... kind of on the Net-horizan, but not really, 'cos it was near us - just to our right - but it felt like it was the edge of Networld. Though it wasn't - know what I mean...?"

Dot nodded. It was one of the funniest things about Netvoyaging - one minute it was like you were flying in the blue and gold sky above the amazing open spaces of the Net, with all the funny net creatures flying all around you and below on the strange surface of the Netplain. A bit like those space films with the stars and planets all around, but with a kind of ground below you - the great plains of the Net, which always reminded Dot of somewhere like Africa in a David Attenborough film.

Next, before you knew it, you were flying very fast along in fibre optic pathways, like being in a long long corridor - twisty-turning with all the data packets zooming past, and the sparkling, glowing lights of the fibre-optics all round you.

So it was easy for her to believe that a window you could walk through could open up in Networld!

"Then" said Mr Mouse "these steps just dropped down from the bottom of the window - click click click. Cousin Esure and I just looked at each other and shrugged and we walked up them. And there we were, on the film set for the esure.com commercials! Amazing!"

"What did it look like?" asked Dot, putting her arms round her legs and bringing her knees up under her chin - her fave way to be when she wanted to imagine something.

"Well for a start I've never seen so many lights!" said Mr Mouse. "They were everywhere - hanging from the ceiling, on kind of stand things, clipped to bits of the set - everywhere! It was so bright! Some were tiny and some were big as a fridge - no kidding! They were all made out of this black metal stuff and there was a guy going round getting them in the right place - with the ones hanging from the ceiling he had to use this big wooden pole thing - like what you use to hold a clothes line up with."

Dot giggled. It sounded funny to be using a clothes line pole in a high-tech film studio.

"And the cameras! There were three big ones on stands that looked kinda like Daleks. There were two guys with little ones on their shoulders. And there was one on this kinda crane thing - must have been eight metres long, no kidding. But the camera girl using it could move it with her little finger, it was so cool that one! All down to weights and balancing it just right they told me. Then there was this A-mazing set, and - "

"But who was in charge?" asked Wiz. (He always likes to know that. Whoever's in charge usually has the treats!)

"Ah!" said Mr Mouse, starting to twizzle his whiskers all over again. "There was no doubt about that, my friends! The toughest director in the business. Oh boy oh boy Just you wait till I tell you about - Samira the Swan!!"
