Chapter 28 - Advice for a Princess

"At LAST!" said Mr Mouse. "Let's get outta here!"

There was no doubt about it - this was the way home, through the exit port. Dot knew once they were all back on the Internet, Mr Mouse could take them all back to her house. It had been a great adventure, but somehow she felt like getting back to the 21st century. And she still had homework to do before tomorrow!

It was so strange... she felt like she'd been away for ages... but in the real world, no time had passed at all. Well, only about one-thousandth of a second anyway. That was the magic thing about net-voyaging.

She pushed the greasy black wooden hatch away to one side. Looking down, she saw the warm bluey-green colour of the net, the super-highway ready for them all to travel along. And she could hear the strange sad music of the net too. As they watched, a data packet shot past, on its way to someone's computer somewhere in the world.

"Let's go, Dot!" said Wizzy. "I want to have a Choccy Chew - feel like I haven't had one for ages. Your Dad brought some back from Doggydo's yesterday, remember?"

"Yes" said Dot slowly. "I remember... "

There was something bothering her. And then she realized what it was.

She straightened up and turned round.

"I've just got to... " she stammered. Mr Mouse and Wizzie looked at her. She could tell what they were thinking. But she just had to!

"Wait here!" she said, and dashed out through the door to the Great House of Easement before her friends could speak!

***********************

Dot rushed along the corridors of Hampton Court Palace. She had to do it - she HAD to say goodbye to the Princes Elizabeth!

She hated goodbyes - but the Princess had become her friend. And you don't leave a friend without saying goodbye!

Luckily, she could remember the way. There was the passage with big tapestry on the way, like a huge carpet hanging up... then across a courtyard covered in funny round stones... then through another big door with big black bolts in it. When she got through that, she knew she was going the right way - she could hear the music from the King's party again.

Standing outside the door they'd all come through with the page boy, she took a deep breath. She had to find the Princess on her own - or King Henry might try and stop her, and make her stay on as Mistress of the King's Musicke. And because she was inside a computer programme about him, he could do it too!

Verrry slowly she pushed the door open. And she was in luck again! The Princess Elizabeth wasn't dancing - she was watching, standing an her own by one of the curtains, clapping her hands gently as she watched the dancing - which was being led by the King himself, with the Lady Catherine Parr as his partner, her right arm in its green sleeve resting gently on his.

Dot slipped along the all to where the Princess was standing. "Pssst!" she went.

The Princess jumped, but smiled when she saw it was Dot. Then her smile faded.

"You've got to go, haven't you?" she whispered.

"Yes... " said Dot. "I just wanted to say goodbye... "

"It's all right" said the Princess sadly. "I knew you couldn't stay... but it's so lonely here sometimes, and you stopped my Papa from being angry with me... and one day I might be Queen, and everyone thinks there should be a King in charge always... it's so hard... "

Dot looked the Princess in the face. No WAY! "Well you can tell them from me" she said in her best "I'm in charge" voice "that you may be a girl, but you're just as good as any man, you tell them!"

The Princess giggled. "I'll remember that!" But then the music started to come to an end. "You'd better go!" she said, and gave a Dot a big hug, the thick heavy material of her dress rustling against Dot's T-shirt.

And that was Dot's last memory of the Princess Elizabeth - a BIG hug from the Princess who was to become Queen Elizabeth I, one of the greatest Queens England has ever seen!

************************

"Where have you been?" grumped Mr Mouse, back in the Great House of Easement. "These exit ports don't stay open for ever!"

"OK, OK" said Dot breathlessly. "Let's go!"

"About time!" said Mr Mouse. "Everyone holding on? Cool!"

And he double-clicked on his back and they were off - down through the exit port and zooming along the super-highway, past the router stations, over the great net-plain, dodging data packets and e-mails as they shot past - and waving goodbye to Dr Scanner as he zoomed by, going "Can't stop! Got a poorly text message to see to!"

How did he get away, thought Dot... but then, if Doctor Scanner couldn't find a way onto the Net whenever he wanted, who could!

THUMPETA-BUMPETA-THUMP!!

HOME at last!

Out through the screen of the laptop they all came, tumbling onto the floor of Dot's bedroom, rolling onto the special rug Gran had bought her... the one with the King Charles Cavalier spaniel on it, just like Wizzie.

"Would you mind getting your paw OUT of my ear!" said Mr Mouse to Wiz, struggling to get to his feet. "Shee!"

"Well if your ear wasn't so big" gruffed Wizzie "I wouldn't be able to get my paw in it, would I?"

"You're one cheeky mutt!" said Mr Mouse. "I oughtta - "

"DON'T call me a mutt!" growled Wizzie. "How many times do I - "

"DOT!" came her Mum's voice up the stairs. "Have you done your homework yet?"

Yes, thought Dot with a grin. I'm definitely home again!
