"Welcome to Wordspring Hall!" Standing in front of them, like a lord in front of his manor house, was a...penguin. But not just any penguin! This one wore a beautiful cap, embroidered gold on a deep red velvet background. Around his shoulders was a shawl, green, purple, blue and shimmering yellow.
And perched on his long yellow beak was a pince-nez - a pair of glasses without the side arms that normally go over your ears. These glasses had a sort of spring in the middle that pinched the penguin's beak, and had a long silver chain hanging from them that went back round his neck so they didn't get lost. On his feet was a pair of slippers with curled-up toes - a rich purple with silver decorations in that curly stuff called brocade.
It was quite a sight! Amazed though she was, Dot couldn't help remembering the evening her Dad went off to the Doggydo's Fancy Dress Ball as Sherlock Holmes, the great Victorian detective - and the coughing fit he'd had when he lit up the famous investigator's huge pipe just before going out!
Remembering that day, she had to try hard not to giggle. But now the penguin was speaking again, beaming round at Sid the Shopper and the Dot com crew in a very friendly way.
"Aha! It's my old friend Mr Mouse (M-o-u-s-e: animal of any of the species of a genus of rodents) isn't it? And you must be Dot (D-o-t: small spot, speck, roundish pen-mark, abbreviation of Dorothy) surely?"
It was a bit hard to know what to say in reply to all that - but before Dot could open her mouth, Mr Mouse leapt in with a big chuckle.
"Aw c'mon H.D, give us a break! We know who we are - and what you can do with words! Tell you what though - let me introduce you to the gang!" He jumped down from Sid's handlebar.
"OK folks! Listen up! This guy here is the tops - the Wordman of the Internet! In fact you can call him the Super Wordman of the Internet! He's the Honourable H.D. Spellchecker - the guy who makes sure you've spelt your words right whenever you put anything in your computer! One of the oldest families on the Net - a class act, in fact! You just gotta click on that little box with ABC and a tick in it on your top toolbar - just up there, take a look right now - and he'll fix any spelling problem you got, right away!"
Dot was surprised to see that their new friend was blushing. She didn't think a penguin could do that. This one could, though!
"Oh I say!" the Honourable H.D. said, taking his pince-nez off and rubbing it on a corner of his gorgeous shawl.. "Too kind, too kind! But I say, look here - won't you all come in and... and... well, have a jolly nice cup of tea anyway... "
With that, he turned round and flung open the flickering doors behind him. Wizzie let out a bark of amazement at the amazing sight in front of them...
