Chapter 45 - Voyaging in Void…

Dot opened her eyes. She really didn't want to - she kind of scrunched them up like you do when you've got to get up for school and you're already late and your mum has turned your bedroom light on to try to get you out of bed and you know you've got to open your eyes but you don't want to. Not just yet…!

But it wasn't much good doing that, Dot soon realized, because there was so little light it felt like she could hardly see. The light in Void was all grey - so was the landscape of Void, and the dust that covered all the strange shapes that lay about as far as the eye could see. It reminded Dot of one very cold January day when she went for a walk with her mum and dad in the snow, out in the country. Apart from the white brightness of the snow itself, the whole world seemed grey that day - so grey that you could hardly tell where the ground ended and the sky began.

And still the dust fell, silently, softly, covering everything, making everything quiet. It was falling on Dot too - but it didn't seem to stick to her like it did to all the shapes she could see. As she moved, it drifted up off her and then continued to fall down on the ground. But every time she moved her trainers kicked up more dust. It was kind of disgusting. Dot shivered.

"Dorothee!" came a tinny little voice out of the sparking bracelet. "Are you OK? Remember mon ami" (that's French for "my friend") "you do not 'ave much time!"

"OK, OK!" said Dot nervously. She started to walk. It was like walking on a sandy beach, but it was kind of more slithery and slippery. Yuk! Dot shivered again.

But then, suddenly, the little tune started coming out of the bracelet - quite loud. Dot took a few more steps. The tune still went on, but got quieter. What now?

Dot turned to her right and walked on. The tune got even quieter, then stopped completely. Dot felt panicky. She turned round and walked back to where she'd been. The tune started again. She sighed with relief, and walked on again. The tune stayed the same.

She kept walking. Still the same. Further and further. STILL the same. Dot stopped.

Adrienne's voice came out of the bracelet. "Try going to your left, Dorothee!"

Dot took a deep breath and turned left. The tune got louder. She turned a bit more to her left. It got quieter. Dot took a deep breath, and, very carefully, turned back to where she'd been walking just a moment before. The tune stayed the same - and then started getting louder again!

"Good!" came Adrienne's little voice. "Very good! Go on,Dorothee! Just like zat!"

Dot stumbled on. She really hated the feel of the ground beneath her feet now - and all the strange crooked shapes around her made her feel slightly sick, and scared. Sometimes she could recognize them - there were thousands and thousands of CD's, for example, stuck into the ground of Void, standing up like clam shells Dot could remember seeing in a film about life on the sea bed.

There was a funny black box, an old keyboard - as Dot passed by she knocked against it and the word 'Sinclair' appeared on it on it as the dust drifted away. But she didn't see it for long, the dust falling from out of the wide grey sky of Void soon covered it over.

And there were some funny mobile phones, lying in piles everywhere: again she accidentally kicked one of them and it went "WAP wap WAP wap WAP wap!" with a tinny noise like a little robot dog barking. What was all THAT about thought Dot.

Then, suddenly, the little tune - which had been getting louder and louder all the time - stopped completely. Dot's heart went flip-flop. She turned her hand so that the sparklng bracelet shone its little TV picture onto the back of her other hand and saw all her friends - Adrienne, Louise D, Wizzie and Mr Mouse all gathered together, looking anxiously up at her.

Adrienne spoke, her little squirrel face full of excitement. "I zink you are near Luis now, Dorothee!" came her little voice out of the bracelet.

Dot looked around. She couldn't see anything near her that looked like the elegant shape of a Borzoi dog like Luis de la Zarpana.

But then, just like Adrienne had said, she felt the bracelet starting to move around her wrist...!
