Chapter 44 - Into Void!

Dot turned her wrist so that the bracelet on it sparkled. It was very pretty. She just wished it didn't mean she was going to have to go into Void!

"Now zat" said Adrienne "will find Luis for you in Void. You heard ze little tune?" Dot nodded. "OK! We will put you as close to Luis as we can. 'E will be no more than a kiloNetmetre when you enter Void. Zat is as close as I can get. But when you are reallynear Luis ze tune will get louder and louder, the closer you are to him. When you 'ave found 'im, it will do zis!" She tapped a key on her Search Engine keyboard and the little bracelet suddenly started going round and round Dot's wrist. It tickled! Adrienne tapped the key again, and the bracelet stopped going round and round. "In Void, zat wil stop" she said "when you touch Luis. But also - we can talk to you with ze bracelet. You can talk back and even see us wiz it - just point eet onto ze back of your other 'and, and a picture will show us. Try it now!" Dot did, and a little square picture appeared on the back of her left hand - it was Adrienne, smiling at her. The picture was a bit like the TV picture that the Teletubbies have on their tummies - only much smaller of course! "OK, good!" Adrienne went on. "Now - when you find Luis you must put ze bracelet on him and then 'e will be able to come back with you out of Void. You will be OK without the protection of the bracelet because you are still a Neophyte. But remember you only have five pages left. Four, now. You must 'urry, Dot."

"Can't I go with Dot?" asked Wizzie anxiously.

"Non, my friend" said Adrienne firmly. "It is always safer for one Neophyte to go on Void Rescue - you might cancel each other and zen we would lose you both." She turned again to Dot. "Ready?"

Dot nodded.

"OK!" said Adrienne gently. "Now sit 'ere in my Search Engine." Dot climbed in. She felt more scared than ever, but she was also more sure than ever that she just had to help.

"Now Dorothee" said Adrienne. "I 'ave put in Blackshanks' password for Void. I am going to switch off the power on my Search Engine without shutting it down first and zen I will switch it back on again. It is somezing you should NEVER do with any computer - even ze one sin your 'ome - because it is VERY bad for eet. But it will create a BEEG power surge - and wiz zat password, ze surge will take you into Void. OK?"

Dot nodded. "Bon!" said Adrienne. "Now, you must put both your hands flat on ze screen and please close your eyes and try to zink of nothing. OK?"

Dot closed her yes and put her hands on the screen just the way Adrienne had told her. It felt warm and slightly squashy - it was one of the new flat screens. She bit her lip as she tried to think of nothing. It was hard! Then she remembered the wall at the back of the Assembly Hall at her school where she sometimes went with Genie if they wanted a private talk. Just a week ago Fred the schoolkeeper had painted it white. It was just a big blank. There was nothing on it even though Fred had said he was going to put up a basketball net, specially for Slam. She smiled as she thought of her friend and wondered when she'd see him again.

"Just zink of nothing, Dorothee" came Adrienne's voice quietly. How could she tell what she'd been thinking about, wondered Dot.

Dot thought of the middle of the wall, bright white like when she had last seen it with the sun shining straight onto it. She squeezed her eyes even more tightly shut and tried to think of nothing else.

"Ready?" came Adrienne's voice. Dot nodded again.

"Switching OFF!"

Again came the horrible noise they had all heard when Void first came on Adrienne's screen - only back to front this time!

"LLLWWWOYEEEEEERCS!" it went. Then suddenly Dot felt a kind of sticky feeling on her hands, like when you get sellotape stuck to you. But it didn't stay on her hands - it spread all over her body. It was a horrible feeling - but it only lasted for a moment and went as quickly as it had come.

As it did the horrible screeching noise stopped and Dot felt the air round go clammy and cold. Then she began to smell a smell - a musty, dusty smell…

The smell of VOID!
