They all climbed back into Adrienne’s search engine and the little
machine‘s engine hummed as it started again. Adrienne ran her paws quickly
over the controls, checking that everything was OK. It seemed it was. “Bon! Allons-y!” said Adrienne,
pushing her blue and white striped cap firmly down between her little red
ears. (That’s French for “Good! Let’s go!”, by the way…) She curled her bushy
tail neatly behind her (that looks comfortable, thought Dot) and pulled back
gently on a lever to her right. The humming got a little louder and the search
engine rose up into the sky over the Internet search zone. Dot gulped. It was like going up in a lift,
but without a building all around you to make you feel safe. She felt another
wave of panic inside her as she looked down on the net floor, now at least
50 metres below them. How where they ever going to find poor Wiz in
all that? As far as she could see, just like before,
the sparkling, many-coloured lights flicked on and off, showing where the
information needed by millions of people all round the world could be found. Somewhere in all that was Wizzie. But where??? “O-K!” said Adrienne. She tapped a code onto
a tiny blue screen in front of her, her little paws clattering on the surface
of the touch-screen as she went. “Now… Monsieur le Baron Blackshanks… we are
coming to get you!” Just as she finished speaking, a series of
little “pip-pip-pip” noises came from the screen. “Ah-HA! EX-cellent!” went Adrienne. She turned
round to Dot and smiled. “We ‘ave a sector fix on ze Baron I think!! Now
watch!” She hit a big red button marked “SearchFind
NOW” in the middle of the panel in front of her, and sat back with her paws
behind her head. She seemed amazingly relaxed to Dot, because immediately
the little search engine began to go faster – and faster – and faster! With
a squeak, Mr Mouse buried himself inside Dot’s T-shirt, in his favourite place
on her right shoulder, his tiny paws digging into her for a firm grip. Dot
grabbed the bar in front of her and shut her eyes. The search engine went
even faster, the lights below them turning into a pink, green, golden, purple
blur. Adrienne looked round again. “Oh don’t worry
Dorothee” she said with a laugh, tapping Dot’s hands as she hung on to the
safety bar of the search engine as tightly as she could. “I show you! Just
let go for a moment!” Dot felt scared. “Ermm… well… ” “Go on! Trust me my friend!” Very slowly,
Dot let go. As she did so, Adrienne leant over to her right – and the search
engine flipped completely upside down! Dot opened her mouth to scream – then realized
she wasn’t falling out. In fact, it felt like she was still sitting the right
way up – totally safe! Then, even more amazingly, the search zone floor slid
over to where the sky had been when they were upside down – below them! They
were the right way up again. Only they hadn’t flipped back – the
whole search zone had moved instead! In a second Dot stopped feeling upside down,
even though the search engine still hadn’t flipped back. She shook her
head so that her bunches bounced up and down. Weird!! Adrienne giggled. “You see?” she said. “On
ze Net everything is possible!” Pip-pip-pip-PIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIP! “A-ha!” went Adrienne again. Smoothly the
little red train started to slow down again, and to curve back towards the
floor below them. Down and down they went, till they were just a few metres
above it. – and suddenly Dot gasped. There was Wizzie!! Only… it was Wizzie, and at the same time
it wasn’t. WHAT had happened to him? ********************************* |
