Chapter 22 – All aboard!

Dot gulped. It didn’t seem possible that she could be talking to a French red squirrel called Adrienne… a red squirrel who was going to help her Dad set up the Munchenmeat Awards for dog food companies on the Internet… a red squirrel who dabbed her wrists with perfume and came from France!

But she was. The Internet was just UNBELIEVABLE.

Adrienne smiled at Dot’s amazement. “Well?” she said with a little chuckle. “Are we going to begin, you and I? 390,000 is a lot of sites, mon ami!”

Dot gulped. “Yes… of course… can my friends come too?”

“Naturally!” said Adrienne. “You English say… the more the merrier, non?”

She reached down inside the cab of her search engine and pressed a button. With a whirring noise, two little trucks appeared behind her, clicking into place so that they were firmly linked to the engine. The shiny silver rails on which the engine was sitting smoothly came out underneath them too – but just like before, only to the end of the trucks and no further.

It didn’t look very safe. Or big enough, either!

“How are we all gonna fit in those things?” said Mr Mouse in his usual sassy way. “ ‘S OK for the mutt and me” – Wizzie growled angrily, he hates that word! – “ – but what about the kid?”

Samson laughed, and everything shook again. Even Adrienne’s search engine bobbed up and down in the air currents caused by the mighty rumbling.

“Just hop up and try!” he boomed. “You’ll be amazed at what Adrienne can do!”

Oh well, thought Dot. Samson’s our friend - he wouldn’t let us down.

“Let’s go!” said Adrienne. Smoothly, she brought her search engine and its two trucks down to ground level. And a strange thing happened. As the engine and its trucks approached, they somehow seemed to get bigger – or at least, Dot suddenly knew she was going to be able to fit into it. As she climbed onto the first of the two trucks, with Wizzie jumping on her lap, it bobbed up and down a bit – but it was perfectly comfortable, with black leather seats like the ones you get in smart sports cars, and even a holder for drinks cans next to her, and what looked like a little fridge in between the seats. Mr Mouse hopped in to the second truck and stretched out in his favourite position with his paws behind his head.

“Nice!” he said. “So, whadda we waitin’ for?”

“For you to – what ees it? – belt up!” said Adrienne briskly.

Mr Mouse opened his mouth to reply, but Wiz stopped him. “Adrienne means put your seat belt on, Mr M” he growled. “And just before we go – I am NOT a mutt, I am a DOG!”

“Whatever!” said Mr Mouse airily, clicking his belt on. “Let’s do it!”

“Just so!” said Adrienne. “ ‘old tight please!”

And they were off!
