Chapter 17 – Back home, just in time!

Panic all round as Dot, Wizard and Mister Mouse tried to tidy Dot's room so her mum wouldn't guess they had just returned from a net-voyage in cyber-space. Dot grabbed the uneaten burger her mother had made for her and hid it under her bed. Wizard flopped on the floor and pretended to be asleep (complete with doggy snorings and nose-whifflings!)

Dot had just put the empty plate back on the table and jumped into her seat at the computer when her mum Suzie Com opened the door.

“Hi Dot!” she said with a sunny smile. “How are you getting on?”

Out of the corner of her eye – to her horror - Dot could see that Mr Mouse was still getting back into his computer mouse position on the mouse mat. He seemed to be taking FOREVER to do it, stretching and yawning and stroking his whiskers. Dot slid gently across the desk so her mum couldn’t see, putting her hand down gently just in front of him.

It seemed like time was frozen as Dot felt Mister Mouse slowly settling down – like a cat getting comfortable on its favourite cushion.

TYPICAL Mr Mouse to take a risk like that, she thought crossly! She’d tell him, once her mum had gone… Dot was sure her mum had seen, but luckily it seemed she was too interested in what Dot had been doing to sort out her dad Bill’s computer for him!

"Oh Dot," she said, “That’s really clever! The Doggydo’s page looks so good. You must show your father!" She went back to the door and called down the stairs. “Bill! Bill! Come and see what Dot’s done for you!”

Dot couldn’t help grinning as she remembered Floyd’s mum yelling out the orders at Tommy’s. They’d have heard her all the way down Barking Avenue, she thought.

With a thumping and a bumping, Dot’s dad came up the stairs. He took one look at the laptop screen and gasped.

“Dot! That’s BRILLIANT! How did you do all that?”

As Dot started to explain, she suddenly saw that silly Mr Mouse had left his little baseball cap out on he desk. Her heart skipped a beat – but then, to her horror, she saw his arm slide slowly out from under the computer mouse shell and pull the cap back out of sight.

“Er… URL… domain name… quite easy…. learned it at school” gabbled Dot. Surely Mum and Dad must have seen that! But then she realized that they were both so busy looking at the new Doggydo’s web page they wouldn't have noticed an elephant skateboarding along the window ledge, let alone a computer mouse with a real tail and whiskers!

It still all seemed very unreal to Dot as she went through what she’d done. She tried to concentrate, but she just kept thinking that she’d just flown into that very computer and gone halfway round the world on the Internet - it was too exciting.

“And… there you are!” she said, finishing with a huge yawn.

Her Dad picked her up and gave her a huge hug. “I’m SO grateful Dot” he said. “Now I can tell Mr Elms everything’s OK – which is just what bosses want to hear - and it’s ALL thanks to you!”

Her mum picked up her hamburger plate. “Glad you enjoyed your burger Dot” she said. (I certainly DID, thought Dot, smiling to herself as she remembered Tommy’s.) “But now – bed! You look really tired!”

It was true – she was. “OK Mum” she said, letting out another big yawn. “I’ll get into my pyjamas… ”

But as Dot lay in bed with the light turned down low, her mind was still racing. Wizard was snuggled up beside her on the bed and she hugged him tight. "Oh Wizzie" she said, "Do you realise - this means we can go anywhere in the whole world now? Whenever we want?"

"We can net-voyage any time we want and meet children all over the world." Wizard gave her face a big lick.

"We can visit the Lakers for top basketball games for Slam, we can go to visit Barbados for Pearl and see where her family come from, we can go exploring in China, we can look for bears in Canada and tigers in India… and… and… " Dot's voice trailed away.

Wizard looked up and gave a satisfied sigh - Dot was fast asleep. He was pleased – she’d need her rest if she was going to become an Internet explorer. He smiled to himself as he thought about where he they could all go next - that's if he could wake that pesky

mouse up!
