Chapter 12 – Net-voyaging

As the crew zoomed back into their net voyage – it was funny, it was like a being tunnel but you could also feel the big, big spaces of the Internet all around you - Dot was hung on to Wizzie's lead as hard as she could. After their run-in with the Cyber rats she was still feeling a bit scared – a kind of out of breath feeling.

“YAY!!!” went Mr Mouse as they flew along. Dot grinned to herself as she remembered Cursor the Cat, the coolest alley cat she'd ever seen. He was a cat with CATtitude, no doubt about it. As he’d vanished back into the net, she’d heard Wizzie mutter under his breath “Not a bad kind of guy - for a cat!”. She grinned again it just showed what an amazing place the Internet was because in the real world Wizzie just HATED cats!

She closed her eyes for a second – but opened them again as a bleeping tune told her they’d reached another computer station. But this time they didn’t stop, they went right on, following a signpost that lit up and simply said “Texas”. Nearly there, thought Dot, and her heart beat faster – it was so hard to believe they’d got all the way to America quicker than Concorde, quicker than the space shuttle, quicker than the speed of light in fact!

As they rushed out of the router, Mister Mouse yelled “Howya doing kid?”

“Fine thanks” said Dot who was still feeling a bit dizzy really - but she certainly wasn’t going to let Mister Mouse know that! “Er..what was that last computer station place by the way?”

“Ah, just a router station, there are millions of ‘em, bit like road junctions really,” replied Mister Mouse. “We were lucky there guys, that was one of the newer ones with light boxes that automatically point you in the right direction. Some of the old fashioned ones where you have to wait to be told where to go are a real drag.” He chuckled and shook his head as the warm air of the net continued to flow past them. “Tell you what though, some of ‘em, like old Bert – no way! if you wind up alongsida him, you get the low-down on his corns and his six children and I don’t know WHAT before he gives you a clue where ya goin'. BOY can that guy talk!”

Wizzie gave a little barking laugh. “Don’t be so unkind mouse” he said, shaking his head. “Bert just likes to make the most of company when it passes by.” He turned round to give Dot a spanielly smile “Now Dot, get ready, we’ll be there any minute now. That’s the beauty of Tommy’s place – where we come back to real-world off the net is right in his office, so we end up right into the bar.”

And before Dot could blink she found herself looking through the screen of a computer into what looked like a very cluttered and untidy office.

Wizard said: “It’s OK - the coast is clear, we’re free to go in.”

And suddenly Dot was standing in the office. It was actually quite hard to find room to stand in it though! It was full of boxes of coke; hamburger cartons and on the desk was the computer they’d just come out of. Obviously the server for Tommy’s web site. Dot found herself giggling. She couldn’t believe she’d actually been “served up” at a hamburger bar. One experience her friend Genie would already have described as “wicked” - and it was far from over!
