The wind of the internet was whistling
past Dot’s face at an incredible speed – it made a kind of whistling and humming
noise, all mixed up with the distant sound of music, like a thousand electronic
choirs all singing together. She hung on to Wizard as hard as she could, her
long hair in its bunches trailing behind her as they all flew down the fibre-optic
cable tunnels. It was dark, but warm and somehow
friendly and welcoming. Then suddenly there was a “Crack-Zooooosh!” as millions
of packets of computer information – electronic data, as it’s called - shot
by at the speed of light, on the way to a computer somewhere in the world. It reminded Dot of being on a
train when you saw another train coming towards you on the next track. It
always looked like it was going to hit you even though you knew it wouldn’t
- but somehow you couldn’t stop yourself being frightened by the noise as
it zoomed past, taking your breath away. Then Dot picked up a slightly
different noise, a kind of strange humming in the distance. They were definitely
being sucked towards it! Wizard and Mister Mouse seemed
totally relaxed, but Dot felt just a bit scared. She gave herself a little
shake and shook her head. She knew she was being silly - Wizard would never
let her down. Just as she was becoming a bit
tired of the darkness of the cable tunnels, she saw a light twinkling up ahead
and they suddenly landed and came to a stop. She was so close to Wizard she
nearly tumbled right over him! When she got up – and the ground
she got up from was kind of soft but still firm, like a bouncy castle - Dot
could hardly believe her eyes. She was in the middle of the biggest bank of
machines and computers she’d ever seen. As far as she looked, there were endless
corridors of whirring disks and flashing lights, every machine seeming to
give out electronic dialling sounds. And the humming noise was louder than
ever! At the centre of all the computers
was the sparkling shining light she’d seen. It was very bright, but somehow
she could still look straight at it. It was coming from the biggest computer
of all. This computer had an enormous screen, and on the screen was the happiest
sunny face Dot had ever seen. The face turned to look at her - and gave her
a great big smile. Then it spoke and the ground literally
shook under her feet, so deep and powerful was the voice coming from the giant
computer. “Hello!” it said, its smile wider
than ever. “Now you must be Dot Com. Welcome! I’ve been expecting you!” ********************************* |
