Chapter 13 - Forest song
The Eden project had come back to life - and so had Evie!
"Diddleypick!"
No mistaking that!
The three friends looked up - and there Evie was, standing on the end of a branch so delicate that even her tiny weight made it bounce gently up and down. But what a change in the little leaf creature! Her body was back to its lovely delicate green colour - and her eyes were shining.
"I knew you could do it!" she said happily. "Everyone here is so grateful - you've saved all our lives, and The Eden Project too!"
"Oh - think nothing of it!" said Mr Mouse grandly. Dot giggled to herself and stuck out her tongue behind the cocky little mouse's back, as Wizard rolled his eyes and shook his head so his floppy, silken ears bounced up and down. "But listen kid. We need some cheese. Now if you could..."
But just as he spoke, something amazing started to happen. With little bell-like sounds, hundreds and hundreds of leaf creatures like Evie appeared in every part of the forest, as far as the eye could see - standing on twigs and branches, hopping from fern to fern, rustling through the long grasses to gather round in a huge circle.
Everywhere you looked, you could see the smiling faces of the leaf people.
"Diddleypick!" said Evie. "Now everyone - 1 -2 -3!"
And suddenly the Biome was filled with the most beautiful singing that Dot had ever heard. It was like a choir of the world of plants - a wonderful, happy and yet gently sad sound that soared up into the great dome above them.
There were no words, but you could understand just what they were all singing; no instruments, yet it was like there was a huge orchestra filling the Biome with its beautiful sounds. The music seemed to make the three friends glow with joy, and to gather them up too, like your Mum does when she gives you a big long cuddle.
It felt like the wonderful music would last forever - but at last it died away, and as it did so, the little leaf creatures seemed to vanish. Only Evie was left on her gently bending branch.
"Where did they all go?" asked Dot in amazement.
"Oh nowhere" said Evie. "And everywhere. We're always here - wherever you see a leaf or a blade of grass, or a tree turning green in the spring, or the berries on a holly at Christmas - we're here with you."
She shook her head, still smiling. "You humans just can't always see us, of course - and sometimes we think you like concrete and bricks more than you like us - but you always come back to us in the end, because you need us just like we need you."
She waved all round her with her tiny little arms. "And THAT'S the message of the Eden Project."
She laughed. "Now - what about that cheese!"
