Chapter 10: Time's up, Sykes!

Wizard, Dot and Mr Mouse had cornered Sykes the cyber rat - who'd put a virus in the computer system running the climate at the amazing Eden Project - where forests of the world have been grown in a huge 'Biomes', deep in a quarry in Cornwall.

To force Sykes to stop his horrible virus, Wiz had made a computer programme which was destroying Sykes' cyber rat badge - the source of life for all the cyber rats, the Internet gangsters who spread viruses round the Net to destroy computer programmes.

Why do they do that? Just for fun. Sick. Sadly, some creatures - even some humans - are like that. Sigh...

But Sykes wasn't having much fun right now. The last little bit of his cyber rat badge - his lifeline - was trembling in the edge of the screen. He let out a furious snarl.

"All right, ALL RIGHT!!! I'll do it. Just don't let my badge die!!"

"Do it, then" said Wizard coldly. "STOP THE EDEN PROJECT VIRUS - RIGHT NOW!"

"OK, OK" said Sykes breathlessly, his little pink eyes flickering towards the corner of the screen. "You've got to do it for me though - I'm stuck in here, remember? Please... please... do it NOW! Hold Ctrl... press F2... now Insert... and Page Up... "

Wizzie's paws sped over the computer keyboard. Dot and Mr Mouse watched amazed. "Where did this mutt learn all this stuff?" he gasped. Dot poked him in the ribs, making the little mouse squeak. "Don't call him a mutt!" she said fiercely.

Down in the main Biome, the Eden Project team were in complete despair. Already they could see the terrible effect of the computer crash on the wonderful plants they'd brought from all over the world for everyone to see - to see and to understand why we need every living thing to help us save our world.

Tammy the programmer was exhausted. Her fingertips throbbed from the dozens and dozens of times she'd re-entered the entire climate programme. She couldn't think what more to do. She sat slumped at her desk, her head in her hands.

Next to her, Eden Project founder Tim Smit raced through the programming schedule again, for the hundredth time. There had to be an answer here somewhere. There just had to be!

But just as he looked down the long list of figures once again, a little paper cup on the desk next to him trembled... tipped up... and rolled off onto the floor. A soft breeze came through the open door from the Biome. Tammy felt it too. She looked up.

To her amazement and delight, the computer screen in front of her suddenly came to life! Figures raced across it. Icons sprinkled down her screen - one after another, and all in the right order. "Climate Programme - OPERATING" appeared. "Tim!" she said jumping up from her seat. "Tim - LOOK!!"

Tim Smit stared at Tammy's screen. A huge grin spread over his face. "We're back!" he shouted. "Everyone - WE'RE BACK!!"

A sweet scent from the forests of the Biomes came gently through the door. Quickly, Tammy grabbed the mouse and began her checks. "Functioning - OK" came up. And came up again. And again. And again! Suddenly the control room around her was full of laughter.

All her friends on the team were cheering and shouting "Yes! Yes! YES!" And Tim was doing a break-dance round the control room - he seemed to have forgotten that wasn't really how bosses were meant to behave!

Tammy suddenly felt the tears come to her eyes. The Eden Project, the amazing world they loved so much and had worked so hard to create, was saved - saved for everyone!
