Chapter 8: Rat in a trap

Chapter 8: Rat in a trap Sykes snarled at the three friends staring at him through the glass. He didn't know how he'd ended up in a crazy living room where wooden puppets were taking all their clothes, but he didn't know how he was going to get out either!

He saw Dot giggling as the last bit of clothing disappeared off the big man puppet in front of him - then noticed that somehow, he was joining in!

His helmet and his biker boots had already disappeared - now his gloves were going too - and to his horror, just as the puppets flopped down at the end of their act, ready to go again, off went his jacket vanishing into space with his all-important cyber-badge, the only thing that kept him going as a cyber-rat!

Outside the display, Dot, Mr Mouse and Wizard were helpless with laughter. Sykes was now standing in the middle of the display trying to cover his embarrassment with his little ratty paws, looking crosser than ever.

Dot took a deep breath. Evie and the Eden Project were in terrible danger! She'd nearly forgotten! She turned to Mr Mouse and Wizard. "We've got to do something - right now!" she said. She was surprised to see Wizard smile and nod his head.

"It's OK Dot" he said. "I can fix this...watch!"

He ran back to the computer they'd all come from, and tapped the mouse twice with his paw. In a flash Sykes was on the screen - still hopping about trying to cover himself up, and still looking furious.

"You're stuck Sykes" growled Wizard (he really hates cyber rats!) "I've got your cyber rat badge... and you won't get it back till you tell us... what have you done to the Eden Project?!"

Meanwhile, down in the Biome, Tim Smit and his team were getting really worried. The temperature and climate control system was worse than ever. Now, instead of the usual complex programme, all they could see on their computer screens were hundreds and hundreds of little ratty faces laughing at them.

And all around them the air in the Biomes was going from hot to cool, from windy to calm, from damp to dry to pouring rain. Every minute the climate changed. Looking out from the office at all the thousands of wonderful plants in Eden, it was obvious the forests beneath them wouldn't be able to take the stress of all this much longer.

Near to despair, the computer team set to work re-running the programme again, for what seemed like the hundredth time.

But time was running out - for them and for Evie, who lay below them, hidden away, her little leaf-chest barely moving at all now, her eyes scarcely fluttering as the air around her swirled and shuddered, and the forest twisted and turned with the crazy climate changes sweeping across it.
