Chapter 5: Entering Eden

The three friends looked at each other. This was serious. The Eden Project was too good an idea to crash down like this. "Right!" said Dot. "What can we do?"

"Diddleypick!" said Evie. ("Why does this kid keep saying that?" muttered Mr Mouse.) "Well first of all you'd better see what I'm talking about...come with me!"

The four of them peeked out round the office door... no one was about. "Come on!" said Evie. Scampering outside, they saw a Land Rover with a little truck behind it.

It was parked just outside the Eden Project Visitor Centre - a big wood and glass building with lots of signs and information about the world of plants, high on a steep slope which led down towards the huge Biomes. Lights were twinkling under the strange and beautiful domes - it was getting dark now.

Suddenly the Land Rover's engine started. "Quick!" hissed Evie. "We're going to go to a building area so you'll have to get these on!" She hopped up onto a basket full of 'hard hats' - yellow plastic helmets with the words 'Eden Project - Visitor' on them.

She saw Dot looking doubtful and nodded her head. "Oh yes! Me too! I'll just have to go inside one." "And me I guess" moaned Mr. Mouse. "Definitely!" said Evie firmly. "We keep everyone safe here at Eden!"

Dot giggled as she popped the smallest hard hat she could find on Wizard's head - he looked so funny with his floppy brown and white ears hanging down underneath.

Tucking Evie and Mr Mouse in their hard hat under her arm, she jumped up into the truck behind the Land Rover just as it moved off down the slope towards the Biomes, Wizzie hopping up beside her.

Closer to, the Biomes looked stranger and more magical than ever - like huge space ships that had landed in Cornwall straight from outer space. Evie Eden was right - this was an AMAZING place!

The Land Rover stopped outside what looked like the biggest Biome with a squeal of its brakes, and the gang jumped down and scampered across the open space in front of one of the domes. They pushed the door open - and couldn't believe what they saw.

In fact it was lucky that no one was standing by the door, because for a moment or two they were rooted to the spot!

High over their heads - higher even than the roof of Winchester Cathedral, where Dot had once been with her Mum and Dad - stretched the great curved roof of the Biome. And all around them, as far as the eye could see, was a forest of the most bizarre and beautiful plants.

It was as if they'd stepped into the heart of a tropical rain forest - everywhere were brilliant flowers: red, orange, purple and gold in fantastic shapes. But above all it was a sea of green of every shade - from the deepest, nearly black, to the delicate, pale greens of ferns and fluttering leaves.

And every size of plant was there too: huge palms with graceful leaves like giant flags, delicate little bushes with curly, fluffy branches; and tall, waving grasses.

It was the most fantastic sight Dot had ever seen!
