Dot was scared, but she was so shocked she was rooted to the spot. It really had never occurred to her that the dragon might breathe fire on them. Rhys and Carys looked as scared as Dot. But Tarian had lowered his head to Mister Mouse and seemed to be waiting for him to come out of his shell.

Mister Mouse, who was feeling no heat, decided to pop his head out to find out what was going on. The dragon smiled and croaked. “Oh sorry about that, but please don’t be afraid. I didn’t mean it, it just happens sometimes, flames come out, a bit like a burp or a hiccup.”

“Good gracious me,” said Wizard, “I wonder what happens if he gets a windy bottom!”

That made everyone giggle. “You don’t want to know” said Tarian, “but I do try to do that in private.” That made everyone laugh even more.

They all breathed a sigh of relief. They were even more relieved when Tarian told them that he didn’t like breathing fire on people at all. He really liked helping children, but he said that he was really lonely because children didn’t want to visit a dragon.

But Carys and Rhys explained to Tarian that they had heard about him in school and they had heard he liked to help children. Tarian looked so happy. “Really?” he said, “that’s tremendous, you see my mum gave me a special name – Tarian – and it means ‘Protector’ and that’s what I like to do, protect children.”

Mr Mouse, who was still not convinced, said: “Yeah well how d’ya get the sore throats then if it’s not breathing fire on people?”

“Well, singing actually,” Tarian replied. “I love it. I’m Welsh you see and we do love to sing. But I get fed up singing on my own sometimes. I wish I had some friends to sing with.”

And so Rhys and Carys, Dot, Wizard and Mr Mouse sang and sang with Tarian. They sang Dot’s special song from her website, ‘Love Can Change the World’, they sang the Welsh National Anthem (although Dot had to hum that one because she couldn’t speak Welsh!). They even sang lots of Tom Jones songs because he was Tarian’s favourite Welsh singer. They all thought Tarian had the most wonderful voice they had ever heard.

When it was time to go home, Dot asked Tarian if he would help her keep all the children safe who come to her website. Tarian was so excited, he said she could call on him any time for help.

Dot, Wizard and even Mr Mouse promised they would bring Carys and Rhys over soon for another good old sing-song.

Tarian decided it was fun being himself after all. He was glad he didn’t like breathing fire on people, it was much more fun having friends!

Carys and Rhys were so glad they had emailed Dot. They had no idea it was going to lead to such an exciting secret – they were now internet adventurers who were going to help Dot protect the children in Wales. It was an amazing secret – a good secret though.
