Dot and the Dragon

Chapter 2

Mr Mouse was very rude sometimes when he was woken from a nap before he was ready. While he was rubbing his eyes and complaining, Dot explained that she wanted him to take her to meet a real live dragon. He stared at her in disbelief and said: “Are you nuts? Don’t you know dragons breathe fire and eat people, and I don’t know about you, but I’d rather not be roasted right now?”

“I know dragons are magical creatures that breathe fire, but these children who have written to me from Wales have told me that this dragon isn’t dangerous and he likes helping children stay safe,” said Dot reasonably.

“Oh yeah,” said Mister Mouse, “’cos if you like roasting kids it’s a good idea not to tell them. Haven’t you read Little Red Riding Hood? This dragon’s probably just like the wolf…telling kids a pack of lies.”

Dot shook her head. “I don’t think so Mister Mouse, these children have done their research and they’ve heard only good things about the dragon. I think he needs to have some friends and I would like to meet him. I don’t think you can judge a person until you have met them yourself and then you can have your own opinion.”

Mister Mouse rolled his eyes.

“She has got a point,” said Wizard, “I do keep telling you not to make assumptions about people until you’ve met them.”

“Fine,” said Mr Mouse, tapping in the address for the children’s computer, “let’s go and find these kids who want to meet dragons. You’re all mad!”

Dot clipped on Wizard’s lead and they were soon flying along inside the internet on their way to meet Rhys and Carys… and a dragon! They were heading for the children’s home in Cave Street in Wales. She and Wizard were hot on Mr Mouse’s tail. They were zooming along the internet, data packets flying by their heads. Dot gave Professor Protocol a wave as they flew past internet control and she hung on tightly to Wizard.

Internet time was not like time in the real world and seconds later Dot, Wizard and Mr Mouse felt the familiar pulling sensation as they reached their destination. The computer in Rhys and Carys’s house was in the spare room and luckily the children were playing a game just as Dot, Wizard and Mr Mouse arrived.
